Moving Target by Cecil Castellucci and Jason Fry

SYNOPSIS: Between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Princess Leia leads an operation that will give the Rebel Alliance time to regroup and prepare to take down the Empire.

This book is so fun to read and I really enjoyed getting to see Princess Leia in action on her own. I also love that there is appearances by other minor characters and it was fun to see Leia interact with characters besides Han and Luke. I really loved that the events from A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back influenced her decision making and weighed on her conscious. I enjoyed her crew and aside from Nien Nunb I wished that we got to know a little bit more about them. I loved how Kidi was so intelligent and at the same time was so hopeful and I enjoyed how Antrot was the typical nerd technician who does not understand emotionally responses/sarcasm. I also liked how Lokmarcha’s practical, military ways were at odds with Kidi’s beliefs and even though they fought a lot they still cared about each other. It was a good team with vastly different personalities and I enjoyed reading them play off each other. I also liked how the idea of “doing what is best for the cause” and the idea of “doing what is right” were at odds with each other and how Leia was able to resolve the two. I loved how Leia was able to tell which side to follow and how each character had a different relationship to both of those ideas. It was also enjoyable (if a little sad) to read about Leia’s life on Alderaan when she would have little things remind her of her parents or her aunts. I also loved that we were briefly shown the relationship between Leia and Mon Mothma since that isn’t really explored at length in the films. My favorite part of these tie-in novels is the fact that they are able to go just a bit deeper than what is able to be shown on the screen. It was also really cool how the story is structured as Leia giving her memoirs and how in the epilogue she references Poe and how she feels like this is a lesson he needs to learn too. It really adds another layer to their relationship as well as letting us know a little bit more about him! I highly recommend this book if you love Princess Leia and if you want even more adventures in the Star Wars universe!
